Generative engine optimization (GEO) vs AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

What generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) mean, how they differ from SEO, and how to start GEO for your brand.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand mentioned and cited in answers written by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. SEO aims for a high ranking in a list of links, and answer engine optimization (AEO) aims to be the single answer a search engine or voice assistant reads out; GEO aims to be one of the brands an AI names when it writes its own answer.

The three overlap heavily, and good GEO is built on good SEO. But they measure different things, and a brand can do well in one while being invisible in another.

SEO: ranking in a list of links

Search engine optimization is about where your pages appear in the results for a query. You measure it with rankings, impressions and clicks. The buyer sees ten links, compares them and clicks through to decide.

The core work is familiar: pages that answer the query well, a site search engines can crawl, and links from other sites that signal trust.

AEO: being the one answer

Answer engine optimization grew up with featured snippets and voice assistants. When Google shows a box with a direct answer at the top of the results, or a smart speaker reads one answer aloud, there is only one winner. AEO is the work of being that answer: clear question-style headings, a short direct answer right below them, and structured data such as FAQ schema.

You measure AEO by whether your page is the featured answer for the questions you target.

GEO: being named in an AI-written answer

Generative engines do not pick one page. They read several sources, often including pages that are not yours, and write a new answer. For "what is the best tool for X", that answer is usually a shortlist of brands with a sentence on each.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper, which found that content with clear statistics, quotations and cited sources was more likely to be used in generative answers. Since then, GEO has become the name for the whole practice of improving how AI assistants describe and recommend a brand.

What makes GEO different:

  • The answer is about brands, not pages. You can be named without being linked, and linked without being named.
  • Other people's pages matter as much as yours. If a review site or comparison article lists your competitors and not you, the AI answer often follows it.
  • Answers vary. The same question can return different brands each time, so results are measured as a share of many answers, not a single position.

How the three compare

SEO AEO GEO
Where it shows List of links One direct answer AI-written answer
What you win A ranking position The featured answer A mention and a citation
Main measure Rankings and clicks Featured answers won Visibility share and citation share
Pages that matter Mostly yours Mostly yours Yours and third-party pages
How stable Fairly stable Fairly stable Varies answer to answer

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Many AI answers are built from pages the engine finds by searching, so pages that rank well are more likely to be read and cited. Sites that block crawlers, hide content behind scripts or answer questions vaguely do poorly in all three.

What GEO adds is attention to the sources around you, and a different way of measuring. A brand with strong rankings can still be missing from AI answers, because the engine trusts a comparison page or a Reddit thread that leaves it out.

How to start GEO for your brand

  1. Measure where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google the questions your buyers ask, several times each, and record who is named and which pages are cited. Our guide to checking your AI search visibility walks through it, or run a free check for one question.
  2. Make your site readable. Allow the AI crawlers you want to be found by, and keep key content in the page's HTML. The free AI readiness checker shows what blocks them.
  3. Fix the sources that leave you out. Get listed on the directories and review sites the answers cite. Our list of the best directories to submit your SaaS is a starting point.
  4. Publish pages that answer buyer questions. Comparisons, alternatives and how-to guides, each with a short direct answer at the top, specific facts and an FAQ section.
  5. Track it weekly. Answers change as engines update and new pages appear, so the trend matters more than any single check.

Questions

What does GEO stand for in marketing?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: improving how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and cite your brand in the answers they write.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap, but AEO is about being the single direct answer, as in a featured snippet or a voice assistant reply. GEO is about being one of the brands an AI names and cites when it writes its own answer.

Do I still need SEO if I do GEO?

Yes. AI engines often search the web before they answer, so pages that rank well are more likely to be read and cited. GEO builds on SEO; it does not replace it.

How do I measure GEO?

Ask the questions your buyers ask in each AI engine, many times, and track the share of answers that name you (visibility share) and the share that cite your site (citation share), compared with your competitors.
